National Sports Director

Responsible for competitions, calendar, format approvals, ranking systems.

At a glance

The National Sports Director runs competition strategy at federation level — calendar, formats, sanctioning, rankings. The platform delivers conflict-aware calendar tools, standardised event templates and a transparent ranking engine so a vibrant national competition season runs without overlap or dispute.

Motivation

Vibrant competition calendar, fair ranking system, quality events.

Context

Sports directors typically come from the umpire or coaching ranks and serve either as elected officers or paid technical directors. They sit at the intersection of every active part of the federation — clubs proposing tournaments, regions defending traditional dates, athletes demanding ranking transparency, championship organisers needing approvals.

A typical national season might involve 200-2,000 sanctioned events across multiple disciplines (triplette, doublette, tête-à-tête, tir de précision, mixed) and categories (senior, women, U23, U18, veteran). The director must balance heritage events with newcomers, district interests against national priorities, and player demands for protected weekends with sponsor demands for marquee dates.

Needs in depth

1

A national calendar with built-in conflict detection across districts, clubs and disciplines so dates can be sanctioned without overlap.

Why it matters

Without conflict detection, every sanctioning cycle produces date clashes that undermine fields and frustrate players. A district championship scheduled the same weekend as a national qualifier forces players to choose, weakening both.

Clubs propose dates without seeing what neighbouring clubs and the national federation have planned, and the sports director becomes a manual mediator between competing requests. Each season produces grievances — letters from clubs, complaints from players, lost participation — that consume director time long after the calendar is fixed.

How Petanque Life serves it

Competition Calendar aggregates every sanctioned event from clubs, districts and the federation into a single map filtered by discipline, category and geography. Sanction requests submitted via Tournament Sanctioning automatically check against existing entries, surface overlaps to the director with affected fields, and let the director negotiate dates in-app with full visibility for every party.

National elite weekends can be reserved to block lower-tier conflicts.

2

Standardised event templates covering draws, scoring and results submission so every sanctioned tournament meets the same quality bar.

Why it matters

Today event quality varies wildly — some clubs run impeccable Swiss-system tournaments with verified results, others scribble brackets on flipcharts and email PDFs days later. Inconsistent formats produce inconsistent ranking points, and the federation cannot defend its national ranking when source events are themselves unreliable.

Players legitimately dispute outcomes when the same event format is run differently across districts, and the director cannot scale without templating the basics.

How Petanque Life serves it

Tournament Sanctioning ships standard event templates by discipline and tier — group stage to knockout, Swiss, single elimination — with required fields for draws, scoring rules, jury composition and results submission. Draws & Scoring runs the bracket from sanction to final, and Results Collection enforces submission deadlines with automatic ranking-point computation.

The director sees compliance per club at a glance.

3

A transparent, rules-driven ranking engine with an audit trail and dispute workflow so player questions can be answered with evidence.

Why it matters

When a player misses national selection by half a ranking point, they want to see the calculation. Today most federation ranking engines are spreadsheets maintained by one person, and a player query takes hours of investigation often producing 'the formula says so'.

Disputes escalate to the board because the underlying maths cannot be re-traced. Selection committees lose credibility when ranking inputs cannot be defended publicly, and the federation faces legal challenges that consume staff time and reputation.

How Petanque Life serves it

National Ranking Engine computes points from results in real time using the federation's published rules — event coefficient, finishing position, opponent strength — with full per-event drill-down for every player. The Player view shows exactly which events contributed, with what point value, and when.

A formal dispute workflow logs queries and rulings with audit trail, so contested rankings are addressed on evidence rather than authority.

In practice

On a Tuesday morning in October, the sports director opens the Competition Calendar to start sanctioning the next season. A southern district has submitted 14 events, two clashing with national championship weekends. He flags both in-app, suggests alternative weekends from the conflict-detection view, and the district chair responds within the day with adjusted dates.

Meanwhile a top-ranked player emails about a missing event in his ranking; the director opens the player profile, sees that the host club submitted results 11 days late and is in pending review, escalates to the club via Results Collection, and the entry is processed within 24 hours with the points retroactively credited. By Friday the calendar is provisionally approved with zero conflicts, and a draft ranking is published for review before the formal selection cycle begins.

What success looks like

  • Date conflicts in sanctioned national calendar at publication: zero across categories
  • Average results submission time after event completion: under 24 hours (vs days/weeks)
  • Ranking disputes resolved within 5 working days with audit trail: 95%
  • Sanctioned events using standardised templates: 100% within two seasons
  • Director hours per week on calendar mediation: reduced 60%
