Generic match statistics tell a pointeur very little. What matters is: across my last 200 pointing attempts, what is my median distance from the jack?

How does that change at 6m versus 9m? How does it change on hard versus soft terrain?

Am I more accurate as a portée or as a roulée? What is my consistency band — am I steady around 30cm or oscillating between 10cm and 80cm?

These are the metrics that drive deliberate practice. Without them, a pointeur is left with feel and the occasional video, which can sustain a good week but cannot diagnose a bad month.

Position-Specific Stats records every pointing attempt in tracked matches and training: distance to jack, throw type (portée/roulée/demi-portée), terrain category, distance band, opponent context. Dashboards show median accuracy, consistency band and trend lines, segmented across every dimension.

A pointeur can compare current month to season average and isolate exactly where form is improving or slipping.

A pointeur's boule is the most consequential piece of equipment in their bag. Weight (typically 700-720g for pointing), diameter (often 74-76mm), hardness (softer for grip on hard terrain, harder for clean roll on soft terrain), and striation pattern (smooth for slide, striated for bite) all interact with the player's hand size, throwing style and home-terrain conditions.

Pointing skill is terrain-conditional. A pointeur who is excellent on packed gravel can be average on loose sand, and the only fix is structured exposure to varied surfaces with deliberate drills.

Self-directed practice drifts toward the comfortable terrain. A good progression library — starting with single-distance accuracy, building to mixed distance, then mixed distance with terrain transitions — turns aimless training into measurable improvement.
